In Genesis 12:1-3, God makes a covenant with Abraham that he will father a great nation and that these descendants will bless the earth. He promises land (Israel), descendants (Jews), and blessings and redemption (Jesus). One could argue that this covenant is the greatest source of strife in the middle east region, let alone the world right now. Interestingly, the Bible prophesies that peace will come to the region when this covenant is confirmed, or acknowledged, by all. This covenant peace will be for 7 years and it will be faciliated by the Antichrist. This is the prelude to Armageddon.
