The sign on the lectern read "Tax Relief," and that's what presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama promised a crowd of over 2,000 during his appearance at Kaukauna High School.
Senator Obama came to talk about his economic plan, and spent much of the speech making highly critical comparisons to Republican rival John McCain's plans.
Obama said a quarter of Senator McCain's tax cuts would go to people who weren't represented in the entire auditorium, who make more than $2.8 million a year. To the audience's cheers and laughter he said it was like McCain was carrying on "President Bush's third term."
"But that's not fair to President Bush," he continued as the cheering died down, "because John McCain's tax cut plan is twice as expensive."
Obama said McCain once opposed President Bush's tax cuts saying it was irresponsible at a time we're at war, "costing us millions of dollars a day in Iraq." Obama said there's nothing "prudent" about continuing the tax breaks now.
After making his comparisons, the U.S. senator from Illinois said he wants to give "real tax relief to the middle class by cutting taxes for 150 million Americans."
"If your family is making less than $250,000 a year, my plan will not raise your taxes, period," Obama said, "and the chances are you will see a tax cut, and bigger than the one John McCain is promising."
